2026 SCR Grant

landscape sketch in cold wax

I’m honored to have been awarded a grant for my project Essential Landscape: Accessible Abstraction from the Statewide Community Regrants Program (SCR), administered by The Earlville Opera House. This grant supports the production of a new body of work––abstract landscape paintings––which I hope will also result in the development of a new workshop for the public.

Email subscribers are the first to know about new workshops, so please do join the list if you would like to learn how to paint in cold wax with me.

I love painting portraits and still lifes, but I’ve always struggled with landscapes. Somehow everything I produce en plain air comes out flat. My hope is that abstraction will be my way in to painting the landscape.

This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and administered by The Earlville Opera House.

Cold wax workshops this fall

Learners at all levels of experience attend my cold wax painting workshops. There are folks who have never painted with oils and folks who have never painted at all. There is usually at least one returning student who uses the class to review techniques and explore some new ideas.

Each time I teach a could wax painting workshop I also learn something new.

One the most alluring qualities of cold wax is its versatility. It gives us the sense that there are few limitations in the ways in which we can use the medium, and so encourages experimentation. At some point in every workshop a learner will say, “what will happen if I do this?” Almost always my answer is: “let’s try it.”
